How Dalat Got Its Name By: Heidi Munan
Based on the storybooks that I had read,I choose How Dalat Got its Name by Heidi Munan as my storybook’s choosen to discuss.According to storybook that I had read,I mostly like this book very much because it has many of an interesting event and also some of values for our benefit that shown by it.Beside that, the flow of this story also are interesting and make me enjoy when read it.
Truthfully,this story is set in Sarawak,in a small town called Dalat that lies on the Oya River.The social setting for this story is set in past where many traditions and customs were followed.The Melanau community holds on strongly to their traditions and customs.
Actually,this storybook is about the conflict in a family whenever the village chief was dead,his sons faced the trouble, who will be the next village chief to replace their late father.In this storybook,Galau,Umat and Lutong is sons of the village chief and their problem begin between Galau and Umat when their father was dead.Galau is the eldest son of the dead village chief,whom,according to the village custom he should be the successor but Umat,the second son had a dream to be the village chief also.Their youngest son,Lutong is the peacemaker between their conflict.So, this storybook has a conflict and event that make me enjoy to read it until the end.
Based on this story,Galau is a main character.,He is the eldest son in a family,so for me he was the most suitable to be a village chief because look at his experience which is more than his brother’s Umat and Lutong.Hence,he can solve many of problem by himself follow by his ability.Beside that,follow by the village custom,the eldest son should be the successor.So,Galau is the best choosen to be a village chief compare to his brother..I like Galau character in this story because as a eldest son,he doing anything to settle the problem between his brother,Umat and himself.He also a lovely son because he loves his father very much.When his father on his deathbed,he was crying and feeling very sad.Galau also the good village chief because anything he doing are for his villagers.We can see when he use his strategy to save his villagers from the war in his village.His potential to be a village chief is higher than his brother’s Umat compare to their abilities.
Umat and Lutong are the minor character in this story.Although we know that Umat is more braver and stronger than his eldest brother,Galau but he has the ambitious to take over their late father as a village chief .In my opinion,Umat is a selfish and can do anything to achieve his vision even kill his family .So, I dislike with him because to achieve his ambition, he goes to the enemy and want to declare war on his village. He also acts as a disrespectful person because he does not respect his father’s saying that his father would be useless in a fight. This shown that he would become a cruelness because of his ambition, who wants to be a village chief. He also an ambitious and presumptuous person, greedy for power and has a leadership skills. Besides that, Umat also did not follows the village’s custome and their tradition. In that case, the eldest son would be the next village chief to replace their late father. Because of his bad behaviour ,many of villagers die on a war that declare by him. On the war, there are a lots of bloodshed and many people dead including Umat .Totally, I dislike Umat because of his bad characteristic.
As we can see in this storybook, the narrator try to makes some good moral values in the Lutong’s character. Lutong is a patient son. As a boy ,his father said that he was sensible and fair. His father also trust him to give his eldest brothers ‘good advice. Lutong also a peace-loving, faithful and loyal and loving boy. As we can see in this storybook, he cares on his brothers .When Umat is missing, he goes to look for him. He is very sad when the old men come to look for Galau, telling him that Umat has gone to look for their enemy.
How Dalat got its name? Actually, after the war between Galau and Umat followers, Galau surveys the scene and sees that there are many flies swarming around. When he sees this situation, he renames the village “Dalat”, which means ‘flies’ in Melanau, in memory of his brother and the others who died in the war. After the end of the war, the village restore peaceful and harmony.
According to this storybook, I think the author was made me enjoy when read it and as a reader, I like this book very much. As a reader,I would prefer to suggest this book and try to read its synopsis to makes your self-opinion and try to compare this storybook with other books that we had read before it .I think this book have many of message for us to applicate in our life. I’m sure we will enjoy when read this book.
Moreover, this story have many of interesting event and also a tragic event like a dead of villager because of war between themselves. So,I totally like this storybook because it give me a lot of values. For example, as a sibling, we must to respect with each other and try to accept the reality.We also cannot do anything without discuss with each other.We also must to learn the means of importance peaceful and harmony and pride and jealousy lead to a person’s downfall. Lastly ,this storybook teach us to be stronger in our family’s relationship.
